At its core, the initiative is driven by a simple yet powerful belief: nothing should be wasted if it can be transformed. Guided by a circular economy approach, Sarabio gives new life to everyday waste by turning it into practical, income-generating products such as household brooms, cooking briquettes, organic fertilizer, and eco-pavements. In doing so, it offers a grounded response to environmental pollution by recovering materials that would otherwise end up in oceans, clutter open spaces, or be burned in vulnerable urban areas—while also restoring dignity through work and contributing to the care of our common home.

Sarabio’s way of working is striking in its simplicity and deeply human in its impact. Rather than relying on imported technologies or heavy financial investment, it begins with what is already present in the community—waste, effort, and creativity. Its strength lies in organised waste collection, careful transformation processes, and a mindset that learns to see value where others see discard. This approach is already taking shape in practical terms, with steady production of briquettes and eco-brooms that are collected, processed, and sold within local markets. Alongside this, SARABIO has grown into a source of opportunity, employing more than 10 young people in Madagascar who gain not only income but also skills, confidence, and purpose. The initiative has also extended its impact through collaboration with women engaged in honey production, linking environmental conservation with sustainable livelihoods in a way that strengthens both ecosystems and community resilience. Through the Jesuit Youth Social Entrepreneurial Action (JYSEA) program, Centre Arrupe Madagascar accompanies these young entrepreneurs, offering not only technical skills and mentorship, but also a strong ethical grounding that nurtures their commitment to environmental care and long-term social impact.

Each Sarabio product tells a story of everyday needs met with dignity and care. The eco-friendly brooms, known locally as ekofafa—a word associated with cleanliness and order in Malagasy—bring practical solutions to households while supporting local livelihoods. In practice, around 40 brooms are produced and up to 50 sold within a cycle, reflecting both demand and growing community trust. The cooking briquettes offer families a more affordable and cleaner alternative to wood charcoal, easing both financial pressure and environmental strain in a region already facing deforestation and energy poverty; recent production cycles have reached about 50 kg, with distribution extending even beyond newly produced stock. In the same spirit, SARABIO is also exploring improved briquette formulations and expanding into ecological building materials, a new value chain capable of producing up to 3 m² per day, while strengthening its supply chain through partnerships with local waste collectors to ensure steady access to raw materials. The organic fertiliser supports farmers in restoring soil fertility, strengthening food production, and responding to ongoing concerns around food security and access to nutritious livelihoods.

Mr. Antonio Rafamantanantsoa founder of SARADIO, when he attended the 8th edition of the Annual African Conference on Social Entrepreneuship (AACOSE 8) in 2025 to showcase some of SARABIO’s products.

Leia também: https://ajan.africa/aacose-8-an-african-immersion-at-the-heart-of-youth-and-social-innovation/

At its heart, Sarabio reflects a way of doing business that holds people and the environment together. This is visible in how the initiative continues to expand its partnerships—engaging NGOs, companies, and local authorities such as the Toliara Urban Municipality and regional environmental services—to build a more structured and sustainable waste management ecosystem.
