The AIDS pandemic in Africa may seem to be such a huge problem that it is hard to imagine how one person can make a difference. But the efforts of Jesuits and their co-workers show us otherwise. What they do is usually not high-profile nor does it reach huge numbers of ‘beneficiaries’, but it does make a very concrete difference in the lives of those reached. They start doing something because they see urgent needs and feel compelled to do something about them.

Let’s take the example of Rozina, a home-based caregiver and teacher at Matero Parish in Lusaka. When two AIDS orphans were not allowed in school, she started to teach them in her kitchen. Soon, her kitchen was full and the parish priest readily granted parish space. Thanks to the generosity of donors, a community school was built. This is just one of many projects that do their best to help people struggling to survive, and that today are facing more and more requests as big international AIDS funding scales down and other programmes downsize or even withdraw altogether.
