BUKAVU, Democratic Republic of the Congo– On Saturday, 15 November 2025, Collège Alfajiri hosted an inspiring conference themed “The Future Is Also Prepared in the Wallet,” organized by the AJAN Club. The event brought together students and experts to delve into the importance of financial literacy in shaping young people’s futures, exemplifying the AJAN HIV and AIDS Prevention Program of the Youth (AHAPPY) mission of empowering young people to make informed and responsible choices to lead a blossoming and successful life.

The session featured Fr. Patrick Mugisho, SJ, and Prof. Tobie Walubila, who guided participants through the conceptual and practical aspects of money management, work, and personal development. The speakers emphasized that work is both a divine principle and a human necessity, noting that studies and education are key to achieving long-term success. They highlighted the importance of perseverance, planning, and teamwork, likening the hand to a tool of efficiency that only functions when all fingers contribute together.

Central to the discussion was the concept of the “wallet”—defined not merely as a financial resource, but as a combination of skills, experiences, and competencies that empower young people to become self-reliant. The speakers outlined a five-step framework for success: prayer, investing in talents, monitoring goals, continuous learning, and adaptation.

Practical financial strategies were also shared. Students were encouraged to establish monthly budgets, separate fixed and variable expenses, save regularly, control unnecessary spending, and develop financial literacy skills such as understanding banking products and managing accounts. The role of money was framed not simply as a means to acquire goods, but as a tool for learning responsibility, enabling future projects, and preventing debt.

The conference also explored the idea of preparing for the future without relying solely on money. Participants were urged to invest in human and social capital, foster community networks, reduce personal needs, and optimize expenses to build resilience and autonomy.
The event concluded with a lively question-and-answer session, followed by a presentation from a recently established local business, which offered real-world insights into entrepreneurship, perseverance, and self-confidence. The day ended with a prayer and brief interviews with students, guests, and speakers, providing an opportunity for reflection and feedback.

Organizers said the conference reinforced the message that financial management precedes wealth, and that equipping youth with the right knowledge and skills is essential for securing a stable and successful future.
