Building Supporting Networks for a Hope-Filled Future

From December 5th to 8th, 2024, twenty vibrant young leaders from five youth groups supported by the Jesuit Youth Office in Zimbabwe gathered at Silveira House in Harare. The goal was to build supporting networks for a hope-filled future. With the support of the African AIDS Jesuit Network, this workshop aimed to empower young people with leadership skills, mental health awareness, and entrepreneurial knowledge, equipping them to make tangible impacts in their communities.

The workshop began with a warm and engaging orientation session. Participants introduced themselves, shared their affiliations, and expressed their expectations for the program. Fr. Peter Banda, SJ, the Program Director, set the tone with an inspiring address emphasizing the significance of this gathering. His words encouraged the youth to embrace the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and become change agents in their respective communities.

The second day kicked off with an insightful presentation by Simbarashe Ndoro on the Ignatian Youth Movement. He provided a comprehensive overview of the Jesuit Youth Office in Zimbabwe, highlighting its structure and mission. A major highlight of the day was a session led by Miss Mary Munetsi from The Friendship Bench, who delved into mental health and coping mechanisms. She explored common mental health challenges, their causes, and the vital role youth leaders play in tackling stigma. Mary also introduced practical strategies for promoting mental well-being in communities.

Mr. Paul Nyamadzawo from ABC Connect leading an engaging discussion on entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship took center stage with Mr. Paul Nyamadzawo from ABC Connect leading an engaging discussion. Covering key aspects such as design thinking, social innovation, and company registration, he challenged participants to devise innovative solutions to socio-economic challenges in their communities. Young leaders then pitched business proposals, demonstrating creativity and a deep understanding of their community’s needs.

The day concluded with an immersion experience at Chichester House, where participants interacted with the elderly LCBL sisters. This heartwarming engagement emphasized the importance of intergenerational solidarity. Finally, Mr. Alfred Makurira presented the Young Catholics Mental Health Policy Draft, which aims to provide a holistic approach to youth mental health and is set to be finalized by the end of this project.

Saturday’s sessions focused on tackling drug and substance abuse. Knowledge Mupembe from Zimbabwe Civil Liberties Against Drug Abuse led a crucial discussion on the Catholic response to the drug crisis, harm reduction, and health interventions. Participants then collaborated to draft an event calendar for the Integral Youth Development Program. The proposed activities include radio programs, online sessions, and digital awareness campaigns.

To strengthen teamwork and camaraderie, the afternoon was dedicated to team-building exercises and recreational activities led by Kimberly Lifa. This interactive session fostered a spirit of unity among the young leaders. The final day was a moment of celebration and reflection. Certificates of participation were awarded to all attendees, acknowledging their commitment and engagement. Each organization being represented in the workshop pledged to implement lessons learned through virtual and physical meetings. Benjamin Matsika, the youth coordinator, emphasized the critical role of digital awareness campaigns and support groups, especially in addressing mental health. The workshop concluded on a high note, with participants feeling empowered to make a difference.

Thanks to the support of the African AIDS Jesuit Network, this workshop successfully journeyed with young people towards a hope-filled future through empowerment. The formation of youth leaders equipped to address mental health challenges, combat drug and substance abuse, and launch entrepreneurial ventures is a significant milestone. More efforts are needed to foster financial independence among young people without heavy reliance on monetary resources. Future initiatives will focus on instilling a strong sense of purpose, helping youth align their decisions with Christian values, and empowering them as change agents. The program has successfully established a foundation for a new generation of leaders committed to mental health advocacy, drug abuse prevention, and entrepreneurship, paving the way for a hope-filled future.
