Radio Kwizera Connector Program Empowers Youth Through Dialogue, Reflection and Personal Growth

Throughout April and May, 2026 Radio Kwizera, in partnership with the African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN), continued to accompany young people through its youth-centred program, Connector. Designed as a safe and engaging platform, Connector creates opportunities for young people to discuss issues affecting their lives, including personal development, relationships, peer influence, and spiritual growth.

The sessions were facilitated by Mr. JohnFisher Odingo, a youth educator from St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School, Nairobi, Kenya whose practical and relatable approach encouraged participants to reflect deeply on their experiences and make informed choices. Through weekly discussions, young listeners explored topics that are central to their development, gaining valuable insights and life skills to help them navigate everyday challenges.

The series began on 28 April with a session on Developing Thinking Skills. Participants were encouraged to strengthen their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, recognising that sound judgment and thoughtful decision-making are essential for personal growth. The discussion highlighted the importance of evaluating situations carefully, considering consequences, and developing the confidence to make responsible choices.

On 6 May, the focus shifted to Communication with Parents. This session addressed the often-sensitive topic of discussing romantic relationships within families. Young people were encouraged to engage in open and honest conversations with their parents and guardians, fostering trust, understanding, and guidance. The discussion underscored the value of family support in helping young people navigate important life decisions.

A week later, on 13 May, participants reflected on Key Influencers in a Young Person’s Life. The session explored the significant role played by parents, mentors, teachers, faith leaders, and community members in shaping attitudes, values, and behaviour. Young listeners were challenged to identify positive role models who inspire growth, accountability, and resilience.

The conversation continued on 18 May with a practical discussion on Avoiding Unsafe Peer Groups. Recognising the powerful influence of peers during adolescence and young adulthood, participants learned strategies for resisting negative pressure, making safe choices, and building friendships that support their well-being and aspirations. The session reinforced the importance of surrounding oneself with people who encourage positive behaviour and healthy decision-making.

The final session in the series, held on 28 May, focused on Spiritual Growth. Participants explored the benefits of prayer, reflection, and cultivating a close relationship with God. The discussion highlighted faith as a source of strength, hope, and moral guidance, particularly during periods of uncertainty and challenge. Young people were encouraged to integrate spiritual practices into their daily lives as a means of nurturing emotional well-being and personal integrity.

The impact of the sessions was evident in the feedback received from listeners. Many participants reported gaining practical tools for making decisions, managing relationships, and maintaining personal well-being. Others noted that the discussions helped them better understand the importance of setting healthy boundaries, choosing supportive friendships, and drawing on faith as a resource for everyday life.

As the Connector program continues to grow, it remains committed to creating spaces where young people can learn, share experiences, and reflect on the choices that shape their futures. By addressing critical areas such as thinking skills, family communication, peer influence, and spiritual development, the program equips youth with the knowledge and confidence needed to make value-based decisions, strengthen relationships, and contribute positively to their families and communities.

Through initiatives such as Connector, AJAN and Radio Kwizera continue to invest in the holistic development of young people, empowering them to become responsible, resilient, and compassionate leaders in their communities.
