Mgr. Munzihirwa Center Marks World AIDS Day 2025 with Dialogue on Education, Awareness, and Ending Stigma

To commemorate World AIDS Day 2025, learners and educators at the Centre Monseigneur Munzihirwa, (CMM), Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) gathered for an engaging and insightful discussion with Dr. Hugues Matwo, focusing on the vital role of education, community involvement, and stigma reduction in ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The session that took place on 1st Decemeber created a reflective and empowering space that aligned with the global call to promote awareness, prevention, and access to treatment.

Dr. Matwo emphasized the transformative power of knowledge, reminding participants that education remains one of the strongest tools in combating HIV and AIDS. By equipping young people with accurate information, communities can dispel harmful misconceptions and empower individuals to make informed choices about prevention, testing, and care. A significant portion of the dialogue centered on breaking down stigma, a persistent barrier that prevents many from seeking testing or treatment. Participants discussed how discrimination, whether in families, schools, or the wider community, continues to hinder progress and why building a culture of understanding and support is essential.

The conversation also highlighted the need for inclusive and community-driven responses. Ending the epidemic, Dr. Matwo stressed, requires the collective effort of government institutions, schools, healthcare providers, families, and local communities working together to ensure that no one, especially the most vulnerable, is left behind. Learners were encouraged to take charge of their health through regular HIV testing, while those living with HIV were reminded of the importance of adhering to antiretroviral therapy (ART) to achieve viral suppression and live healthy, fulfilling lives.

The World AIDS Day event at the Mgr. Munzihirwa Center served as an important platform for learning and reflection. It reaffirmed that the fight against HIV/AIDS must continue beyond a single commemorative day, through ongoing awareness, solidarity, and collaboration—paving the way toward an AIDS-free future.
