Integral Youth Development: Forming Leaders for Others

The Integral Youth Development (IYD) Program under the Jesuit Chaplaincy Office in Harare, Zimbabwe directly aligns with AJAN’s mission to promote holistic transformation of young people through values-based formation and service. By nurturing faith-driven leadership grounded in Ignatian spirituality, the program equips youth with the knowledge, skills, and conscience needed to respond to the complex realities of their communities

In pursuit of this mission, the program recently hosted a leadership formation workshop on 11 -12 October 2025, designed to empower six (6) National Leaders from National Movement of Catholic Students and twenty-four (24) student leaders from University of Zimbabwe, Harare Institute of Technology, Midlands State University -Harare Campus, Belvedere Teachers and Technical College with both practical skills and Ignatian values to guide their service within their institutions and catholic societies (Cathsocs).

Rooted in the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, the leadership formation drew inspiration from the 4Cs of St. Ignatius—Competence, Conscience, Compassion, and Commitment. Fr Tendai Matare of the society of Jesus (Jesuits), indicated that these four pillars provide the foundation for nurturing leaders who are not only capable but also guided by moral integrity, empathy, and a dedication to service. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their personal journeys of leadership and to integrate faith, justice, and self-awareness into their daily interactions.

Ms Rufaro Tapiwa Kaviya delivered an insightful session on a range of essential leadership skills, including emotional intelligence, professional communication skills and conflict resolution. Participants learned to understand themselves and others better, manage emotions effectively, and foster teamwork built on respect and trust. She emphasized active listening and clarity which are key traits for leaders seeking to inspire others and promote understanding. On conflict resolution, students were guided on how to address disagreements constructively, using dialogue and empathy as tools for unity rather than division.

Mrs Synodia Mahachi, from the Jesuit Development Office of Southern Africa gave a crucial and important topic on proposal writing and grant application. The discussion equipped leaders with the ability to develop and present community-based initiatives that can bring real, lasting impact to those around them.

Throughout the formation, facilitators emphasized that leadership is not about authority but about responsibility. It is about becoming “men and women for others,” ready to serve and uplift their communities. By integrating Ignatian spirituality with practical leadership development, the Integral Youth Development program seeks to cultivate leaders who think critically, act justly, and love generously. Leaders who embody the Jesuit vision of service rooted in faith and justice.
