How Salia Lapin is Transforming Lives Through Food, Farming, and Opportunity

What began as a simple dream and a passion for cooking has grown into a thriving community enterprise that is changing lives in Burkina Faso. Le Restaurant Salia Lapin is today more than a restaurant, it is a story of resilience, innovation, and the transformative power of opportunity.

In a community where food security and employment opportunities remain pressing challenges, the enterprise has become a trusted space where people can access affordable and nutritious meals rooted in Burkinabè culture. Customers are welcomed with local favourites such as riz gras, toh with green sauce, grilled chicken, and fresh salads harvested from the restaurant’s kitchen garden.

Behind the scenes, another success story is taking shape. A growing rabbitry farm located at the back of the restaurant supplies the kitchen with affordable protein while also generating additional income through the sale of rabbits to households and local butcheries. Together, the restaurant and rabbitry form a sustainable model that continues to strengthen both livelihoods and food access within the community.

At the centre of this inspiring journey is Traore I. Salia, a young entrepreneur and a participant in the Jesuit Youth Social Entrepreneurship Action (JYSEA) Program. Although Salia had long possessed natural cooking skills and determination, he lacked the business knowledge and support needed to turn his abilities into a lasting source of income.

Through AJAN’s mentorship, training, and accompaniment, Salia gained practical entrepreneurial skills, financial management knowledge, and the confidence to build a sustainable enterprise from the ground up. During programme sessions focused on food security, nutrition, and community resilience, the idea of combining a restaurant with rabbit farming emerged as an innovative solution capable of addressing multiple local challenges at once.

Today, that vision is bearing fruit. The restaurant serves an average of ninety meals daily and has created employment opportunities for two young people, one working in the restaurant and the other managing the rabbitry. What started with only a few rabbits has now expanded to more than two hundred, demonstrating remarkable growth and sustainability.

The impact extends far beyond one business. Salia now dreams of empowering other young people through rabbit-rearing training and mentorship. His goal is to equip future trainees with starter kits containing breeding pairs and basic equipment so they too can establish income-generating activities and contribute to food security in their own communities.

Through AJAN’s support, what started from humble beginnings has become a growing enterprise that nourishes families, creates jobs, and inspires hope. Salia Lapin’s journey is a powerful reminder that when young people are equipped with skills, mentorship, and opportunity, they can build lasting change for themselves and their communities.
