AJAN and the Laudato Si’ Journey: From Hope to Action

In this May 2026 edition of AJANews, the African Jesuit AIDS Network proudly joins the global celebration of Laudato Si’ Week 2026 under the theme “From Hope to Action.” The celebration marks the 11th anniversary of Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’, which continues to inspire communities around the world to care for creation through prayer, reflection, and concrete action.

The message of Laudato Si’ Week reminds us that “hope is not passive.” Rather, it is lived through daily choices, relationships, and acts of care for both people and the environment. This message strongly resonates with AJAN’s mission across Africa. Through its response to HIV and AIDS, its empowerment of vulnerable communities, its support for women and youth, and its promotion of sustainable livelihoods, AJAN continues to show that caring for people and caring for our common home are deeply interconnected.

At the heart of Laudato Si’ is a call to love and responsibility. It challenges humanity to rethink lifestyles and systems that contribute to poverty, exclusion, and environmental destruction. Across Africa, the communities most affected by climate change, food insecurity, and poverty are often the same communities that are vulnerable to HIV and social marginalisation. AJAN responds to these realities through an approach rooted in human dignity, solidarity, justice, and integral ecology.

Across the AJAN network, this commitment is already visible in practical ways. In Madagascar, Centre Arrupe Madagascar recently led awareness campaigns encouraging communities to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment. In Sierra Leone, young innovators supported through AJAN’s Jesuit Youth Social Entrepreneurship programme are using technology and renewable energy solutions to expand technological knowledge and opportunities for young people.

AJAN’s Building Resilience in Women and Girls in Africa (BRWGA) project, implemented across several African countries, also contributes to sustainable development by promoting food security, entrepreneurship, psychosocial support, and economic empowerment. Through these initiatives, women and youth are becoming agents of positive change within their communities.

Inspired by St Francis of Assisi and his message of peace and care for creation, the Church this year commemorates 800 years since his death. During this Jubilee Year, Pope Leo XIV called on humanity to renew peace with God, with one another, and with all creatures.

As the month of May draws to a close, Laudato Si’ Week reminds us that ecological conversion begins with small but meaningful actions. By joining this global movement, the African Jesuit AIDS Network renews its commitment to promoting human dignity, ecological justice, and sustainable communities across Africa. The journey from hope to action begins with each one of us.

In this edition of AJANews, readers will also discover inspiring stories from across the network, including the visit of AJAN Director Fr. Ismael Matambura to Canada to strengthen solidarity, partnerships, and awareness of HIV response initiatives in Africa. The edition further highlights the launch of the 2026 Building Resilience in Women and Girls in Africa (BRWGA) programme at Centre Saint Ignace in Kinshasa, where vocational training in sewing and tailoring for young girls officially began on 23 April, while 50 women living with HIV received financial support on 29 April to strengthen their livelihoods.

Readers will also learn about the work of Art Mokili Ngonga, which empowers youth to move beyond theory into practical design and innovation for interior spaces. In addition, the edition features the Digital Dignity & Safety workshop organised on 9 May 2026 by the Jesuit Youth Office of Southern Africa, in Zimbabwe which focused on protecting women’s rights in online spaces and equipping young people with the tools for safe and responsible engagement in today’s digital world.
