AHAPPY Program: Empowering Missionaries to Journey with the Marginalized in Compassion and Hope

From April 14th to 16th, 2025, we had the privilege of participating in a transformative training organized by AJAN at St. Peter Canisius in Kimwenza. As Mistress of Novices, I witnessed firsthand how this formation deeply enriched both our personal lives and our missionary outlook.

The sessions served as a wake-up call, urging us to recognize the gravity of the health challenges—particularly sexually transmitted diseases—that persist in our society. It became clear that many individuals living with such conditions face rejection and stigma. The training reminded us of our responsibility to seek regular testing and medical support, and to live in fidelity to the vocation we have embraced. The Church’s call to live in continence was reinforced as a dignified path that safeguards our health and spiritual integrity.

Beyond ourselves, we were reminded of our duty to care for others—especially the youth. As missionaries called to evangelize on the peripheries, we encounter many who are marginalized, including people living with HIV. This training equipped us not only to accompany them with compassion but also to offer practical help and hope.

With our novices preparing for mission in three months, this formation came at a perfect time. It served as both a personal resource and a valuable tool to help them support others facing health and social challenges. Some of our novices will soon be teaching in schools, where they intend to use AJAN materials to guide and inspire young people.

We are immensely grateful to Father Ismael Matambara and Father Jean Charles Kubana Bantu for their dedication and generosity in facilitating this essential formation. Their commitment has empowered our young missionaries with knowledge, empathy, and courage as they step into their mission fields.
