The AHAPPY Training of Trainers (ToT) for religious in formation at Scholasticat Jésuite Saint Pierre Canisius in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) took place from April 14th to 16th, 2025. The training brought together 75 participants, including Jesuits in philosophy, novices from different congregations, trainee teachers, and students from the Loyola University of Congo.

Led by Father Ismaël MATAMBURA SJ, Director of AJAN, and Father Jean KUBANABANTU SJ, the session began with a presentation of the values and goals of the AHAPPY program. This helped clarify the importance of accompanying young people in their holistic growth—spiritual, mental, social, and physical. The speakers emphasized the importance of active listening and being present when accompanying the youth, thus sharpening the participants’ relational skills.

Participants also had the opportunity to share their personal and professional experiences, which enriched the discussions and encouraged the exchange of ideas. Through interactive workshops, they explored the core principles of the program, as well as tools and strategies they could later apply in their communities and apostolic missions.
One of the participants, Modeko Agnes, a pre-novice of the Oblate Sisters of the Heart of Jesus, shared her moving testimony about the impact of the session:

“During the three-day AJAN (HIV) session held at Saint Pierre Canisius, I was deeply touched and impressed by the teachings. This training helped me understand more clearly the wonders of God toward His people. Though many of us were once unaware, AJAN opened our eyes to the reality that HIV/AIDS is transmitted not only sexually but also through blood and shared sharp objects such as razors or knives. This calls us to be vigilant and to support our brothers and sisters, especially those preparing for marriage, by encouraging precautionary measures like blood testing and safe practices.”
“For me, the key lesson is to help young people be cautious before engaging in sexual activity so they do not fall into the trap of this disease. While sex is a gift, it can also be dangerous to human life if not approached responsibly. We are therefore called to help the youth focus on building their future, serving their communities, and resisting manipulation or exploitation—just as illustrated in the film ‘Sarafina’, which we watched during the training.”
Her reflection echoed the central mission of the AHAPPY program—our mission of empowering young people to live responsibly, with dignity, and in pursuit of a better future.
The session concluded with a certificate award ceremony for all participants, symbolizing not only their commitment but also the beginning of a journey to put the teachings into practice. The awarding of certificates was followed by a memorable photo session, capturing the smiles and joy of the shared experience.

The AHAPPY training concluded with a closing Mass, celebrating the success of the program while deepening the spiritual bonds among participants. It offered a moment of reflection, renewed commitment, and openness to new inspiration for their ongoing mission.
This training was thus a valuable opportunity for skill-building, sharing experiences, and personal growth, revealing a promising future for each participant in their commitment to youth and the community.
