Walking with Hope: Celebrating the Ignatian Spirit of Service and Transformation

The Church and the Society of Jesus marked the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola on 31 July. The African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN) joins in celebrating the enduring legacy of a man whose vision continues to inspire lives across Africa and beyond. St. Ignatius taught that authentic leadership is rooted in discernment, compassion, and service. His call to form women and men for others remains at the heart of AJAN’s mission to accompany those on the margins through education, healing, empowerment, and integral human development.

In this July 2026 edition of AJANews, we share inspiring stories that bring this Ignatian vision to life. This edition also marks a significant moment for the AJAN family as we congratulate our Director, Fr. Ismaël Matambura, SJ, on his appointment as Socius to the President of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM). We are deeply grateful for his dedicated leadership, unwavering commitment, and service to AJAN, and we assure him of our prayers as he takes up his new role. We are confident that his wisdom, collaborative spirit, and Ignatian leadership will continue to strengthen the mission of the Society of Jesus across Africa and Madagascar.

The July edition opens with a meaningful homecoming of Cardinal Michael Czerny, SJ. Cardinal Czerny is the first director of AJAN. His coming is not merely a presence but a reconnection with communities where the network’s mission first took root. His visits to St. Joseph Development Programs at Kangemi, Lang’ata Women’s Maximum-Security Prison and Children of God Relief Institute (COGRI)–Nyumbani reaffirmed is deep commitment and advancing of integral development of human person, a conviction that AJAN continues to uphold. 

Additionally, the issue brings us to St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School, on the event of their Patron’s Day. The 21^st  of June carries a central place to the school as it is the feast of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, who is the Patron saint of the institution. This year’s feast was celebrated under the theme, “Nurturing Competence, Character and Faith for Service.” a theme that typifies Jesuit model of educating the whole person and preparing young people to become compassionate leaders for others. The celebrations were marked by prayer, faith formation, and the commissioning of new Competency-Based Education laboratories.

From South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, we share inspiring testimonies from beneficiaries of the Building Resilience in Women and Young Girls in Africa (BRWGA) project. Implemented by the Multi-Educational and Agricultural Jesuit Institute of South Sudan (MAJIS) and CVX–St. Ignace Kingabwa, the initiative is empowering women and young girls with vocational skills, financial support that enable them create pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

This month also saw the AJAN team join inmates at Naivasha Maximum Prison in Kenya for a Thanksgiving and Commissioning Mass honouring 36 inmates who successfully completed the AHAPPY Training of Trainers (ToT) programme. Their achievement is a powerful reminder that hope, dignity, and transformation can flourish when people are given the opportunity to learn and grow.

We also celebrate the inspiring progress of young participants in the Jesuit Youth Social Entrepreneurship Action (JYSEA) programme in Madagascar and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through entrepreneurial training, mentorship, and Ignatian values, these young innovators are transforming their ideas into social enterprises that address local challenges, create livelihoods, and bring renewed hope and opportunity to their communities.

Together, these stories remind us that lasting transformation begins by walking with communities, believing in their potential, and creating opportunities for them to thrive. As we honour St. Ignatius of Loyola, may his invitation to “go forth and set the world on fire” inspire us to become instruments of hope, reconciliation, and justice, building a future where every person can live with dignity and purpose.
