Cameroonian Jesuit writes book about AIDS in Africa

Cameroonian Jesuit Harris Cleaver Tombi SJ has written a book in French about AIDS in Africa. The book, Prévenir le VIH/Sida en Afrique subsaharienne – Pour un engagement responsable du malade (Preventing HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa – towards a responsible commitment of people with HIV) has been published by the Paris-based Edilivre.

In his book, Harris insists that the cultural, social, economic and political drivers of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa need to be taken into account in the struggle against the pandemic. Among the factors that have enabled HIV/AIDS to flourish in the continent, we find poverty, injustice, armed conflict and the lack of education among youth. Harris also makes a compelling case for the “effective integration of people living with HIV in AIDS prevention”.

Harris is a committed member of AJAN. He set up the Coin des Amis, a project promoting AIDS awareness among youth in Kyabé, southern Chad, and was counsellor for the Afoubenou group of people living with HIV in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Harris is currently doing a Masters in bioethics and moral theology at the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain.
