North-west Africa Province (ANW)

The ANW Jesuit Province incorporates Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia. In Nigeria, AIDS ministry is part and parcel of many of the Jesuits’ apostolic works. In Lagos, for example, a Jesuit is chaplain at the University Teaching Hospital.

In Gidan Mangoro, Abuja, AIDS ministry has long been part of the make-up of the Loyola Jesuit College. The school helps affected students and staff, as well as residents of surrounding villages, and has a Youth Against AIDS club for students.

At St Francis secondary school, of the Jesuits, in Idimu, Lagos, there is a Youth Alive club for those students who completed the Education for Life (EFL) course – EFL is a value-based HIV prevention approach popular with the Catholic Church in Africa.

There is EFL and YA activity in two parishes run by the Jesuits too: Christ the King Parish in Ilasamaja, Lagos, and St Joseph’s Parish in Benin City. St Joseph’s has a committed Parish Action Committee on AIDS (PACA) whose volunteers visit people living with AIDS. The parish also hosts an AIDS support group, for 10 to 15 people, which meets monthly.
