In a bold step toward building a safer and more just society, Saint Joseph Development Programmes (SJDP) – Kangemi, Kenya hosted a transformative Youth Forum on Supporting Survivors and Ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on 29th July 2025.

Facilitated by Madam Sophia and Madam Nancy, the session focused on equipping young people with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to recognize, prevent, and respond to GBV in their communities. The forum addressed the root causes of GBV, particularly within urban informal settlements like Kangemi.

Participants explored how poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, overcrowding, harmful cultural norms, and lack of access to education and healthcare all contribute to a higher risk of GBV in slum areas. The facilitators emphasized that these structural inequalities often create environments where violence becomes normalized and survivors fear stigma or retaliation if they speak out.
Through open dialogue and the sharing of real-life experiences, the youth deepened their understanding of survivor support systems, reporting mechanisms, and preventive strategies. More importantly, they were empowered to become agents of change — speaking out, supporting survivors, and promoting values of dignity, equality, and respect.

As we continue accompanying young people towards a hope-filled future , we continue to empower young people by creating safe and inclusive spaces for the young people those marginalized, free from violence and fear.
Together, we can support survivors, challenge harmful norms, and put an end to GBV.
