How Ma Blanchisserie is Restoring Dignity & Transforming Community through Job Creation and Easing Everyday Burdens

In one densely populated neighbourhood of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the simple task of washing clothes had become a daily struggle for many families. Limited access to water, demanding work schedules, and the physical strain of handwashing placed a heavy burden on households, particularly on women and girls who carried most of the responsibility.

While assessing community needs, Rouamba P. David as he went through the AJAN Jesuit Youth Social Entrepreneurship Action (JYSEA) Program, David identified something often overlooked yet deeply important: the urgent need for a reliable and affordable laundry service. What appeared to be an ordinary challenge revealed an opportunity to improve daily life, create employment, and restore dignity to essential domestic work.

For Rouamba P. David, this discovery aligned perfectly with his passion and practical skills. He had a clear business vision but lacked the financial means and entrepreneurial support to bring it to life. Through the AJAN Jesuit Youth Social Entrepreneurship Action (JYSEA) Program, David found the opportunity he needed to transform his idea into reality.

After successfully completing a competitive selection process that evaluated both business sustainability and social impact potential, David received mentorship, entrepreneurial training, and seed capital support from AJAN. With this support, Ma Blanchisserie officially opened its doors in November 2025, equipped with industrial washing machines, drying racks, and an ironing station.

Starting from the ground up, the business quickly began earning the trust of the community. Operating on a walk-in model, the laundry service offers same-day and next-day washing services at affordable rates. To ensure accessibility for vulnerable households, David introduced subsidised pricing for neighbourhood residents, embedding solidarity and community care into the foundation of the enterprise.

Within only two months of operation, Ma Blanchisserie had already served more than twenty regular clients and achieved full operational cost recovery, a significant milestone for a newly established small business. Beyond financial sustainability, the enterprise is already creating meaningful social impact.

The laundry business has provided formal employment to a young man from the neighbourhood, offering him a stable income and practical work experience. Looking ahead, David plans to expand the initiative by introducing a laundry literacy programme for adolescents and youth groups within the community. The programme will teach practical skills such as textile care, stain removal, and garment maintenance while promoting the message that domestic work deserves dignity, recognition, and professional value.

Through AJAN’s support, what began as a simple community need has evolved into a growing social enterprise that is easing daily burdens, creating opportunities for young people, and transforming perceptions around everyday labour. Ma Blanchisserie stands as a powerful example of how local innovation, when nurtured with mentorship and opportunity, can create lasting change within communities.
