From Anticipation to Achievement: Insights from My Experience with AHAPPY Training

April 2026 will remain an unforgettable chapter in my life. On the 21st of April, I began the AHAPPY Training of Trainers at St. Francis Catholic Parish, Idimu – Lagos, with little expectation. My initial motivation was simple: to become a better steward and, perhaps, gain an additional certification. However, what I experienced over the next five days went far beyond that, it was a deeply transformative journey.

The training commenced with an engaging and thought-provoking activity led by our facilitators, Ms. Sergon and Ms. Samantha. We were asked to create and perform a skit that reflected everyday life in Lagos, highlighting societal challenges. Using simple tools like pen and paper, we expressed issues such as peer pressure, poor decision-making, and health risks. After each presentation, the facilitators carefully listened and then asked a powerful question that resonated throughout the training: “Where are you in this story?” This moment marked the beginning of deep personal reflection. It became clear that while we could easily identify problems in society, we often overlooked our own roles within them.

Day One set the tone for self-discovery. At that point, I struggled to clearly define who I was and what I stood for. However, I also felt a strong sense that I was exactly where I needed to be. By Day Two, the sessions became more interactive, focusing on communication, values, and leadership. The facilitators created a safe and welcoming environment, making it easy for everyone to participate, share, and learn without fear of judgment.

Day Three was particularly impactful. We were introduced to comprehensive sessions on HIV and AIDS, including modes of transmission, prevention strategies, and the importance of awareness. A powerful video on stigmatization opened our eyes to the realities faced by people living with HIV. This was followed by a deeply moving session with a guest speaker who shared her personal experience of living with HIV. Her story was both emotional and inspiring, breaking down misconceptions and reinforcing the need for empathy and advocacy. That same day, I willingly took an HIV self-test, an experience that symbolized courage, awareness, and responsibility.

By Day Four, we were equipped with practical tools for facilitation and community engagement. We learned how to effectively pass on knowledge, lead discussions, and influence positive behavioral change among young people. Day Five brought everything together, reinforcing our purpose as trainers and change agents. It was a moment of clarity and commitment.

In conclusion, the AHAPPY Training has profoundly impacted my life. I discovered my strengths, gained confidence, and developed a clearer sense of purpose. I now understand my role in creating a healthier and more informed society. I am deeply grateful to AJAN for this opportunity and to our Chaplain, Fr. Eyrah Foli (popularly known as Slim), for bringing this initiative to the youth of St. Francis Catholic Church, Idimu. Today, if I am asked who I am, I can confidently say: I am a change-maker, committed to raising an AHAPPY generation.
